===Background===
[[Candy Ann Pickus]] left the [[Children of God]] in [[1978]]. In [[1980]],  she filed for divorce from [[Brian Pickus]] and was granted custody of all her children. According to police reports, filings in civil and criminal cases and related newspaper articles, it is alleged that on September 1, 1980, [[Brian Edward Pickus]], four hired goons and an undertermined number of members of the [[The Family|Family]] entered her home, beat her and took her two older children.  Pickus fled with the kidnapped boys to [[Chile]], [[Argentina]] and possibly [[Spain]]. A few weeks after the kidnapping, Candy Ann Pickus and [[Richard Peyer]] filed a civil suit against the [[Family of Love]], Brian Pickus and John M. Day. The outcome of the case cannot be determined without additional information including a review of the actual filings.  Although it was apparently dismissed in January [[1984]], the case history indicates that the case was not terminated until June [[1991]] and that motions were filed after January 1984.  In [[1982]], Candy Ann Pickus also filed a civil suit against Phyllis Gotwalt (Brian Pickus's mother, who allegedly was somehow involved with the abduction of her grandchildren and the procurement of forged passports) and several others.
