The Word or Word of God is used within The Family to describe Biblical scripture as well as writings from The Family's leaders.

Members are required to read between one and two hours of Family literature daily, though more is encouraged.

Mo Letters and other Family publications are often considered a higher authority than the Bible. In 1973, group founder and leader David Berg stated:

38 Some of the parts of the Bible are no longer up to date!

[...]

42 And I want to frankly tell you: if there’s a choice between your reading the Bible, I want to tell you you had better read what God said today in preference to what he said 2,000 or 4,000 years ago!"  —"Old Bottles" (ML 242, July 1973)
