Category talk:Initialisms

From XFamily - Children of God

I have several problems with this new category:

  1. Its title needlessly excludes acronyms and other abbreviations. Most people don't care about the difference between acronyms, initialisms, etc., and many dictionaries (e.g. Mirriam-Webster) list descriptions of both forms under the definition for "acronym".
  2. I think the relatively verbose description of initialisms in the intro is out of place. For one, "initialism" is a common term, and secondly, xFamily is not a dictionary or all-purpose encyclopedia.
  3. I'm not sure how we'll deal with the fact that the majority of our articles about Family terms are listed under their expanded titles, rather than their often more commonly used acronyms.

Do you think a category is preferable to a an article listing Family acronyms and initialisms? That approach would also have the benefit of allowing us to show the expanded terms without readers having to follow each link. --Monger 19:41, 15 October 2006 (PDT)

  • The idea behind this new category was to separate the many "GBY", "GBAKYLG", "LHU", etc. into a single category. There are quite a few of these and they can clutter our general "Glossary" category. A way around this is to use your suggestion of having a single "Intialisms" article listing all of these on a single page (with the expanded form of each). Of course, we would have to go through all of our articles and change the links. (note: The extended intro in the category was to introduce why I chose it.) --Thorwald 20:44, 15 October 2006 (PDT)
