Religious "persecution" was historically used to explain away any criticism of the cult, ranging from attempts by law enforcement to determine the extent of abuse within The Family International to mere criticism of the leaders.

The Family's persecution complex continues to influence everyday practices and life today, but in recent years heighened criticism by second generation ex-members has caused The Family to, in large part, shift the blame for perceived persecution from the supposed jealous churches and Antichrist forces to a new culprit – "bitter vitrolic apostates".
