Police raided a home owned by a cult that has been accused in neighboring Argentina of child abuse and rape, private Radio Nanduti reported Wednesday.

The raid Tuesday came on the heels of a crackdown on the sect in Buenos Aires, where the cult is known as the Family. Members there face charges of rape, child abuse and kidnaping.

The Paraguayan branch of the cult, an offshoot of a U.S. group called the Children of God, is under investigation on similar charges, Radio Nanduti said.

The cult's attorneys in Argentina have denied any wrongdoing, saying that their clients were "members of a missionary community that lives a very austere life... and provides its children with great affection and protection."

The Children of God was founded in Huntington Beach in the 1960s. It has followers in several Western countries.
